Window to the West
Grain Growers' Guide → The Country Guide
Window to the World
The Grain Growers' Guide and later The Country Guide was published and circulated throughout Western Canada from 1908 to 1936. In its day, it had the highest circulation of any farm paper in the region. It helped shape public perception while providing useful and insightful information to its readers. Serving as a source of entertainment for some, the newspaper informed a wide audience. The Guide was an influential part of Western Canadian society. It gave women a much-needed voice, as the founding members and editors were large supporters of the Women’s Suffrage Movement. The newspaper evolved alongside society, a key component of its continued success and circulation. Its existence is significant in understanding and providing a unique perspective into the social constructs of the roaring twenties and early thirties. Just as this publication serves as our window to the west, for those subscribing and reading it was their window into the world beyond the farm.
On behalf of our group and HIST 391 we would like to thank the staff at Special Collections for their continued support and words of encouragement. Without their help this project could not have been accomplished, so thank you.
